Difficult situations open opportunities for us to dig deep within and tap into an inner strength and courage that we had not known existed. In doing this, we can prevail through the hardest of adversities, growing in ways we thought impossible.

This "prevailing" embodies the Finnish concept of "sisu" - a value that means forging on despite the odds, keeping hope alive no matter how dire the circumstance, and tapping deep within to the power of the human spirit to do what's right, honoring the greatest good, in a way that is beyond our perceived limitations...ultimately to prevail in the best way possible.

Amber Norgaard wrote "Take It Higher" for the Multanen Legacy Scholarship Fund, a scholarship foundation that helps people who have been through struggle, hardship and trauma to rebuild their lives through education. Education is power, and students who receive funding assistance embody this value of "sisu."
